Listen to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as performed by Urban Renewal
The Lone Star Cafe NYC
Early on when I was learning how to play music my family and friends mentored me. Among them was the guitarist Pete Kairo who gave me my first experiences playing in front of a live audience. "...the late Peter F. Kairo. Peter was an extraordinary self-taught ragtime guitar player and had a new album out that included "Bottom Dollar", a lively rendition of John Phillip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" and his trademark "Sweet Georgia Brown". I was a twenty year old aspiring folksinger and had been playing around New England for only about a year. Peter was generous of heart and spirit and left a lasting impression on me". by James Nihan
Urban Renewal Bluegrass. I cannot say enough things about how playing in this band impacted my life. This band for me was like a power trio typically found in rock music. Phil Nusbaum, banjo, Karen Van Norman, bass, and I were in sync like no other band I have been in and that showed in our music. We met at a jam session at the Homestead Pickin' Parlor in MN when I joined their band! Along with us were some talented folks. Kari Larsen on mandolin "How High The Moon", Loy Larsen on violin and our pal Mark Kreitzer on mandolin. Thanks Guys! Click here to buy our award winning CD Urban Renewal Bluegrass.
Obi’s Boys the band that never practiced! As with many bands when they first get together we started out as jamming buddies. Tom Healy on mandolin and me on guitar, began playing together at jams in his attic back in the ‘80s. We’d get together weekly at his house or a a number of friend’s houses or a party we could crash and play until the wee hours of the morning. It wasn’t until after I moved back from Minneapolis to Newton in ’02 that the band came together when high school buddy Gary Fisher, Upright Bass, joined us along with the multi-talented Mark Evans, English Concertina and Banjo. Check out our contributions to the CD English International.
